Determination

The law requires that daily collective worship in school should be wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character.

This is appropriate for most schools across the country.

Schools without a religious character can apply to the local Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) for an exemption from the ‘broadly Christian’ requirement for some or all of their pupils.

This is called a ‘determination’, and alternative worship must be provided for these pupils.

The determination procedure however allow the requirement to be lifted in respect of all of the pupils in a school where it is inappropriate.

In making a determination, the local Standing Advisory council for Religious Education (SACRE) has to have regard to any circumstances relating to the faith backgrounds of the pupils which are relevant for deciding what character of collective worship is appropriate. “Education Reform Act 1988.

The Determination can apply to all of the pupils at the school or some of the pupils at the school.

If a school has pupils of Christian heritage then the MPA advises that the school should apply for a Determination for Muslim pupils only.

Educational Environment

"The child has a different relation to his environment from ours. Adults admire their enviroment; they remember it. The things he sees are not just remembered; they form part of his soul. He incarnates in himself all in the world about him that his eyes see and ears hear. In us the same thing produce no change, but the child is transformed by them." Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind.
